MRI Scans: MRI scans were performed
in the horizontal, coronal, sagittal, and
oblique coronal planes according to a
standardized protocol (Assheuer et al.,
۱۹۹۰). The corresponding section planes
were defined by (a) the intercommissural
line and verticals intersecting this line in
the center of the anterior and posterior
commissures, and (b) the vertical to the
brain stem axis (Meynert’s plane).
MRI scans of the anatomical preparations
(in vitro imaging): Scans and
measurements were performed on a 0.15
Tesla superconductive magnet (Vista
۲۰۳۵, Picker International). We used a
multislice double-echo sequence [spinechosequence
(SE) 5000/40/160] with
four excitations to render proton (N(H))-
and T2-weighted images. These scans are
presented in the pages preceding the atlas
figures of the horizontal, coronal, and
sagittal sections (Sections, 2.1, 2.2 and
۲٫۳, respectively).

Preparation and Photography of 1 cm
Anatomical Slices: Immediately after the
MR scans, the heads were cooled to -45°C
and then sliced at 1-cm thickness either in
the horizontal, coronal, and sagittal plane.
The coronal section plane was angulated
by –۲۰°, such that the plane of the section
is parallel to the brain stem axis and
corresponds to the major ascending and
descending fiber tracts. The head slices
were then cleaned, and photographed
together with a scale bar. Afterwards the
slices were transferred into preservation
fluid.
